David Tennant on the Tenth Doctor's adventures with Rani Chandra

Doctor Who Magazine speaks to David Tennant about stepping back into his old trainers in a new series of Big Finish audio adventures...

Big Finish Productions recently announced The Tenth Doctor and Rani, a new trilogy of audio adventures coming August 2027. David Tennant will be reprising his role as the Tenth Doctor in twelve new stories, the first three of which see him team up with an old acquaintance - Rani Chandra, played by Anjli Mohindra in the Doctor Who spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Doctor Who Magazine caught up with David Tennant ahead of the announcement, and discussed what it's like to return to his beloved role time and time again...

Doctor Who Magazine issue 633 is on sale from Thursday 20th August. You can order it here.

The Tenth Doctor invites Sarah Jane, Luke, Rani and Clyde aboard the TARDIS in 'The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith'.

David Tennant on returning to play the Tenth Doctor:

“It’s always just a joy to come back. Catherine [Tate] and I have done some Big Finish audio stories. Billie and I have done some. It might be nice to do some with Freema [Agyeman], that would complete the set. I got to do one with Bernard [Cribbins] – it’s a shame, there can be no more of those.

“One of the fun things, as someone who’s always loved the show, is trying out different combinations that we didn’t get to enjoy on the telly. One of the best ones I’ve done was with Colin [Baker, Sixth Doctor] – a Weeping Angel story. It was on a planet where you couldn’t see, because of the brightness, if I remember correctly. When you find an idea where audio is the only way of telling the story, it’s particularly effective.

“Now I’m back with Anjli [Mohindra, who plays Rani] who I did that one episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures together all those years ago…  The Sarah Jane connection means they cut straight through to having a deeper bond than they might have the right to have…”
