With Doctor Who: The Movie now available on Blu-ray, here's the story of the Eighth Doctor – from his television appearances to his adventures beyond the screen…
A dashing and charismatic incarnation, the Eighth Doctor debuted in a made-for-TV movie that aired in the UK on 27 May 1996. Played by Paul McGann, the Doctor faced off against his archenemy, the Master, in a battle to save the world.
Much of the Eighth Doctor's history has been told across audio dramas, novels, comics and more. When he finally returned to our screens in 2013, he regenerated into... well, as River Song would say, spoilers! From television adventures to expanded-universe stories, we'll explore some key moments from the Eighth Doctor's history below...
A New Beginning
Doctor Who: the Movie
Before the renegade Time Lord, the Master, was exterminated by the Daleks, he made a peculiar request: he wanted his remains to be taken back to Gallifrey. His choice of courier? None other than his arch-rival, the Doctor. But after the TARDIS was forced off course – landing in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve, 1999 – the Seventh Doctor was caught in the crossfire of an armed gang, and rushed to hospital.
Dr Grace Holloway thought she had failed to save the mysterious stranger’s life. But little did she know he had a trick of his own; and emerging from the morgue clad only in a white sheet, with short-term amnesia and a brand-new face… the Eighth Doctor was born!
Teaming up with Grace, the Doctor set out to prevent the Master from stealing his remaining regenerations – an action that would destroy the world in the process. After the Master attempted to turn his defeat of the Doctor into a ceremony in the depths of the TARDIS, the Doctor rather unceremoniously shoved him into the TARDIS’ Eye of Harmony, defeating him once and for all (?).
Celebrating New Year’s and saying goodbye to Grace, this new incarnation of the Doctor took off once again to explore the universe…
The Middle Eight
The chronology of the Eighth Doctor’s travels – especially the middle section of his life - are all jumbled up in a big wibbly-wobbly ball of excitement and danger, told across different mediums. As to what order everything happens in? We’ll leave that up to you!
A world of audio adventures, comic books and novels awaits you on your journey with the Eighth Doctor – so where would you like to start?
Audio
At some point during his travels, the Doctor landed on the doomed R101 airship. Although, he wasn’t the only gatecrasher. Charlotte Pollard – Charley to her friends – a self-styled ‘Edwardian Adventuress’, had snuck onto the ship. Uncovering a plot to ally Britain with a (quite literal) alien power, the two of them set about preserving the web of time. The plan, along with the R101, went down in flames and Charley joined the Doctor aboard the TARDIS. [Storm Warning]
Only the more they travelled, the clearer it became they weren’t protecting the web of time; they were unravelling it. Charley wasn’t supposed to have survived the crash of the R101, and it was only after a climactic battle against Rassilon that her place in the timeline was restored [Zagreus]. Along the way they travelled with the 19th century aristocrat Lady Audacity Montague and later, while exploring a different universe, a Eutermesan called C’rizz. Ultimately, the two were forced to part company in a battle against the Cybermen.
Sometime later, Lucie Miller was thrust into the Doctor’s care by the Time Lords. They weren’t immediate friends, but despite their initial reluctance, the icy impasse between them quickly thawed.
They travelled all over history, foiling schemes by the Daleks, the Cybermen and even the rogue Time Lord, Morbius. Sadly, their time together was cut cruelly short, as Lucie was killed preventing the Daleks from conquering the Earth. The loss of Lucie drove the Doctor to try to take the TARDIS to the end of the universe, but he was intercepted by the Time Lords [Dark Eyes]. After being dispatched on a new mission to the trenches of World War One, the Doctor soon found someone else to travel the universe with: Liv Chenka.
A medtech from the planet Kaldor, Liv had briefly met the Seventh Doctor before jumping aboard the TARDIS with the Eighth Doctor. After saving the universe from the clutches of an alien called the Eminence, the Doctor and Liv found themselves fighting against a coalition of rogue Time Lords. This alliance wanted to destroy the universe, but with the aid of Helen Sinclair – a linguistics scholar from the 1960s – they were able to defeat them. Helen joined the Doctor and Liv in the TARDIS. The three of them saved the universe on multiple occasions, including facing several incarnations of the Master at once.
After being stranded on Earth in an alternative timeline, Liv decided to stay with her girlfriend Tania, leaving the protection of the universe down to the Doctor and Helen.

Comics
While the Eighth Doctor has also appeared in several adventures from Titan Comics, his longest-running comic series can be found in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine, which we shall explore below…
At the start of his comic adventures the Doctor landed in the village of Stockbridge. The entire village had been transformed by the Toymaker, except for sci-fi enthusiast Izzy Sinclair and her friend Max. After saving the village, Izzy leapt at the chance to join the Doctor on his travels. The pair fought against the Daleks, vampires and even visited Gallifrey before they were joined by a most unusual companion….

That’s right. For a short time, the Doctor travelled with a Cyberman. He was called Kroton (no relation to the Krotons) and he had managed to retain his personality. Their time together was sadly short lived. The Master had hatched a scheme to conquer all of time and space using a device called the Omniversal Spectrum. While the TARDIS trio were able to defeat him, Kroton opted to remain behind and protect the Spectrum.
Captured by an alien vessel, Izzy was tricked into swapping bodies with the alien Destrii. She continued to travel with the Doctor in Destrii’s body – and while the Doctor was eventually able to reverse the switch, that was quite enough adventure for Izzy. After the Doctor dropped her back in Stockbridge, he and Destrii continued to travel together; and though we haven’t seen how their journey together ended, the last we saw of them, they were busy saving the Earth from an advanced strain of the Cybermen!

Novels
Falling for a trap left for him by the Master, the Doctor was thrown back to the junkyard in Totter’s Lane where he meets Samantha ‘Sam’ Jones [The Eight Doctors]. Rescuing Sam from being attacked, the two of them took off to explore all of history. Their adventures were marked by dealing with a future conflict between the Time Lords and an unknown enemy. Eventually their travels took them back to Earth in 1963, where they were joined on their travels by Fitz Kreiner, after a chance encounter at a florist's.
After finding the stresses of TARDIS travel too much, Sam decides to leave the Doctor. Fitz remained the Doctor’s only consistent companion throughout his novel series, The Eighth Doctor Adventures. Along the way, they were joined by Beatrice ‘Trix’ MacMillan who had actually stowed away aboard the TARDIS. Like with Destrii, we don’t know how Fitz’s and Trix’s travels with the Doctor ended. However we know that travelling with the Doctor brought them together and they started dating [The Gallifrey Chronicles].

His Final Days
When the Doctor brilliantly burst back onto our screens in 2005, it was the fantastic Ninth Doctor flying the TARDIS. It was exciting and thrilling, but in no way answered the questions:
What happened to the Eighth Doctor? How did he regenerate into the Ninth?
Appropriately enough, we wouldn’t learn the answers for another eight years. Little did we know at the time that Nine actually doesn’t directly follow Eight…
The Time War
The Eighth Doctor was reluctant to get involved in the Time War – and due to the twisting temporal nature of this devastating conflict between the Time Lords and Daleks (told across multiple stories and media from different perspectives), there is much of this time in the Eighth Doctor’s life that is uncertain. We know that the Doctor desperately tried to avoid the front lines and was traveling with a woman called Bliss for a time – though what became of her in the face of the war is unknown. He also had another companion – her name may have been Sheena or Emma or Louise, though we may never know for sure.
What we do know is that on his last day, he met Cass Fermazzi. It should have been a happy meeting; her ship was crashing and the Doctor was there to rescue her. But when the Doctor revealed the TARDIS, she was repulsed. She hated the Time Lords as much as the Daleks. She refused to be rescued, and they both died in the crash.
Temporarily revived by the Sisterhood of Karn, the Doctor was given a choice of regeneration. Realising that he failed to save Cass, the Doctor relented. There wasn’t a need for a Doctor anymore. He finally regenerated and was reborn as a warrior...
Guardian of the Edge
The Power of the Doctor (2022)
Thankfully, his regeneration wouldn’t be the last we saw of the Eighth Doctor. Along with the First, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors, he appeared as one of the Guardians of the Edge – a space within the Doctor’s subconscious – that advised the Thirteenth Doctor when the Master temporarily stole her body. Unlike his robed contemporaries, however, the Eighth Doctor’s manifestation opted to keep wearing his signature outfit.
The End?
In timey-wimey fashion, new adventures for the Eighth Doctor continue to be released, across all different mediums. So for the Doctor who only had one TV adventure back in 1996, he has perhaps lived the longest life of all for the last 30 years – Long may his travels continue!
