The Shreek

Played by Gethin Alderman

“It enjoys the hunt - feeds of fear... It wants you scared and running, pumping with adrenaline... because it likes the taste.”

First Regular Appearance
Lucky Day

A race of advanced predators released from their pocket dimension to hunt once a year, the Shreek are able to track their prey by releasing a pheromone, contained with a slimy excretion, marking victims as a future feast even if they remove the slime. They then return to claim their prize a year later, when, once again, they are released from their dimension.

The Shreek also induce fear through their background radiation, which messes with electricity, plunging their captives into darkness. They enjoy the hunt, taking their time to play with their prey and feeding off their fear and adrenaline because they like the taste.

Shreek

Character bio

The Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday encountered the Shreek sometime after their adventure with the Beatles against Maestro, with the Doctor revealing he was able to neutralize the pheromone via an antidote. The beast was then captured by UNIT who were still holding it a year later, when Ruby Sunday met Conrad Clark, a podcaster who had been unwittingly marked by the pheromone.

The creature seemingly escaped to hunt Conrad, cornering him and Ruby during a weekend away. However, this was revealed to be a ruse: Conrad was able to use Ruby’s description of the creature, as well as his brief glimpse of it when tracking the Doctor a year prior, to create a fake Shreek attack in order to reveal the “truth” about UNIT.

Kate Lehtbridge-Stewart later released the real, captive Shreek to track Conrad after he broke into UNIT as a further part of his exposé. Ruby was able to stun the Shreek at the last moment before it ate Conrad; although it was able to revive itself enough to give him a quick bite on the arm!
