Ncuti Gatwa and David Tennant explain the Doctor's Humanity

With a double interview with David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa, the Doctors break down the Anniversary Specials and the Doctor’s very human side with this new edition of Doctor Who Magazine.

The latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine (DWM) is on sale from Thursday 5th January. It is available to order as a subscription, either physical or digital, here.

David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctors, bigenerating

What makes the Doctor love humanity? Why do they keep exploring the Universe? And what motivates them? Ncuti Gatwa and David Tennant discuss in this extract from their joint interview.

Ncuti: “I feel very, very connected to the Doctor. Ultimately because the Doctor is hope. They fight for each life that they come across. Even Daleks. They will defend... well, not defend, but –”
David: “See the best in?”
Ncuti: “Yeah. Well, maybe not Daleks. I don’t know. If I get to meet a Dalek – I don’t know if I will – I might find out. But it’s just so beautiful that there’s this show about aliens that teaches you so much about humanity.”
David: “I like that it’s always a triumph of intelligence over ignorance, and compassion over thoughtlessness, and wit over force. Sometimes in this world you can feel that the other side is winning.”
Ncuti: “Yeah, especially these days.”
David: “The Doctor is motivated by righteousness and that indomitable spirit, and it’s never about brute force. It’s never about weaponising anything. It’s always just about seeing –”
Ncuti: “– seeing the light and the dark, and not judging either. The Doctor never judges.”
