First seen in the disreputable bar, the Maldovarium, Colony Sarff appeared as a mysterious figure in a long, hooded robe, searching for the Doctor.
This quest continued to the heart of the Shadow Proclamation, where it was revealed that Colony Sarff is working for Davros, the creator of the Daleks. A final stop on the planet Karn and Colony Sarff left a message for the Doctor – that he must face Davros one last time.
On Davros’ advice, Sarff followed Clara and Missy back in time to an Essex castle in 1138 where they found the missing Time Lord. Confronting the Twelfth Doctor, the segments of Sarff’s face turned in different directions. Sarff was revealed as a huge snake, surrounded by smaller sentient snakes – a “snake nest in a dress” as the Doctor put it.
The Colony transported their three prisoners to the Daleks’ home planet Skaro. When Davros activated his plan to drain the Doctor’s regeneration energy, Sarff was revealed in the cables and bound the Doctor to the machine. However, before Davros could succeed, Missy burst in and shot the wires and cabling, freeing the Doctor and killing Sarff.
