How to make a ‘Joy to the World’ Ham and Cheese Toastie

The Doctor’s on the hunt for someone who’s ordered a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte – and now you can make your own at home!

As featured in the 2024 Christmas special Joy to the World, and on the Official Doctor Who podcast, you can cook the Doctor and Joy’s festive feast - time-travel has never tasted so good!

Watch Joy to the World on Christmas Day, premiering at 5:10pm GMT on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ where available.

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of thick white bread.
  • 1 tablespoon of butter (or margarine, if you’re feeling rebellious like the Doctor).
  • 1-2 slices of cooked ham.
  • 2 slices of your preferred cheese.
  • Optional: a dash of cranberry sauce for an extra festive zing!

Method:

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread - you can also butter the side touching the grill or pan for extra crispiness.
  • Add the cheese, then ham, then cheese again for extra gooiness.
  • Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat until nice and hot, then add your sandwich.
  • Flip the sandwich and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Once the cheese has melted and both sides are golden brown, remove from the pan and serve immediately.

Optional Extra Step: Find someone to share your sandwich with, hopefully without bumping into people from Everest Base Camp, the Orient Express or Manchester, 1940...
