Arthur Darvill revealed why now was the time to return:

“I’ve resisted bringing Rory back for so long. Me and Kazza [Karen Gillan] always said that when we left Doctor Who, that’d be it. We didn’t want to do anything that would touch the story because it was such a beautiful thing. It was also the biggest thing I’d done at that point. When you leave a big job you want to spread your wings, and if you keep returning to something, especially soon after you’ve left it, I think I’d have got stuck and typecast myself a little.

“I’ve been lucky in the eight years since that I’ve managed to do a load of varied, brilliant work that I’m really proud of. So coming back to Rory now, I didn’t have any of the emotional turmoil that I’d have had maybe five years ago."
