Doctor Who writer on the importance of diversity on television

By Cameron K McEwan

This week’s instalment of Doctor Who: The Fan Show – The Aftershow goes behind the scenes of the latest Series 10 episode, Thin Ice, with its writer Sarah Dollard and Costume Designer Hayley Nebauer.

Dollard, who also penned 2015’s Face The Raven, spoke about female representation on television, stating that it is “hugely important” both in front of and behind the camera. The writer adds:

“It’s important to have female voices in every department on the show. It should reflect the gender breakdown on the street.

Everybody has got slightly different stories to tell, slightly different perspectives, slightly different experiences. All of those voices should be represented on the show and in the show; whether that be by gender or race or class.

Diversity is where it should be at in all departments.”

Also up for discussion is the costuming over 100 extras and Peter Capaldi’s love for top hats in Thin Ice, and just how intense the Twelfth Doctor’s hair will become in Series 10…
